(Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) – More than 25 years ago, Michael H. Roland, student activities liaison for the Broward County Public School System, founded the South Florida Leadership Training Camp, an annual five-day leadership workshop for high school student government leaders in Florida held at Nova Southeastern University.
In recognition of Roland’s devotion to Broward County students, the Broward Education Foundation has established the Michael H. Roland Student Leadership Fund to support the student leadership programs of the Broward County Public Schools, primarily the South Florida Leadership Training Camp. This will ensure that student leaders will continue to thrive and meet their highest potential.
“With the help of donors, we will continue Mike’s dream that generations of students from our schools will have the opportunity to become world-class leaders,” said Thomas P. Severino, president/CEO of the Broward Education Foundation. “Our Broward County Public Schools, the South Florida Leadership Training Camp and generous donors will join together in creating a vibrant community of service leaders ready to take on the challenges we face in the 21st Century.”
Camp alumni represent some of the finest leaders in our community, across the state and throughout the country who often cite Roland’s role in inspiring them to develop personal and vocational goals, self-esteem, confidence, motivation and to fully participate in community life and effect positive social change. Since 1990, nearly 7,000 students that have participated in SFLTC have been given the opportunity to participate in a variety of leadership development activities that are conducted in both small and large groups.
“I am humbled and honored,” said Roland, a 50-year veteran of the Broward County Public School System, who will retire in 2016. “I keep in touch with so many of the students who attended the leadership camp and I couldn’t be prouder of all of them. We all have a responsibility to do what we can to make sure our students succeed.”
